Dahej CETP: 40 MLD Advanced Oxidation Ditch for Sustainable Industrial Wastewater Management

Completed in 2017 for Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), this 40 MLD Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Dahej Industrial Estate treats mixed industrial effluents from chemical, petrochemical, and other units in the Dahej PCPIR area.

The core technology is an advanced Oxidation Ditch system (extended aeration-based) for robust biological treatment, achieving high BOD/COD removal and nutrient reduction while handling variable industrial loads. It ensures compliant discharge to deep sea via GIDC’s dedicated pipeline, minimizes environmental impact, and supports Dahej’s rapid industrial growth as a key hub in Gujarat’s chemical corridor.

Effective Treatment of Complex Industrial Effluents

Primary aims:

  • Treat 40 MLD of mixed industrial wastewater to meet stringent GPCB discharge standards.
  • Deploy advanced Oxidation Ditch for efficient, stable biological treatment of high-strength effluents.
  • Handle variability in influent quality from diverse industries (petrochem, pharma, etc.).
  • Enable safe deep-sea disposal while promoting sustainable industrial development.
  • Provide scalable CETP infrastructure for Dahej’s expanding PCPIR zone.

Managing Variable Industrial Loads in High-Volume CETP

Key challenges:

  • Dealing with fluctuating, high-COD/BOD effluents from multiple chemical/petrochem sources.
  • Achieving consistent performance in Oxidation Ditch under variable flows and toxicity risks.
  • Ensuring robust aeration and sludge management in extended aeration mode.
  • Coordinating large-scale construction in active industrial estate.
  • Meeting evolving environmental norms and compliance during commissioning.

Advanced Oxidation Ditch with Extended Aeration Design

Core process: Advanced Oxidation Ditch (extended aeration) for progressive biological degradation, nutrient uptake, and stabilization of organics.

Highlights:

  • High-rate aeration (aspirator/process aerators) for oxygen transfer and mixing.
  • Long hydraulic retention time for complete nitrification/denitrification (BNR capabilities).
  • Integrated clarifiers for solids separation and recycle.
  • Potential two-stage enhancement (Bio-Tower pre-treatment in some configs) for better resilience.
  • Automated controls for pH, DO, and flow to optimize performance.

This delivers reliable, high-removal treatment suited to Dahej’s industrial mix.
