Dindoli Tertiary Treatment Plant: 40 MLD Sewage-to-Industrial Water via UF-RO

Completed in 2020 for Surat Municipal Corporation, this key project expanded Surat’s wastewater reuse network with a 40 MLD Tertiary Treatment Plant (TTP) at Dindoli. It processes secondary treated sewage using Ultrafiltration (UF) followed by Reverse Osmosis (RO) to deliver high-quality industrial-grade water (low TDS, BOD, color, and contaminants).

Supplied to textile and other industries, it reduces freshwater demand, generates revenue for SMC through water sales, and contributes to the city’s sustainable model — part of the 115 MLD total reuse capacity across Bamroli, Dindoli, and related sites. The plant exemplifies efficient, automated membrane technology for circular water management in urban India.

Scaling Industrial Reuse with High-Purity Output and Economic Benefits

Primary aims:

  • Convert secondary sewage into reliable industrial-grade water to meet growing demands in Surat’s textile hubs.
  • Achieve stringent quality via UF-RO multi-barrier treatment for consistent, contaminant-free output.
  • Boost SMC revenue through sales of treated water while conserving groundwater resources.
  • Demonstrate scalable municipal reuse post-Bamroli success, supporting Surat’s 100% wastewater recycling vision.
  • Minimize environmental footprint by promoting treated water as a sustainable alternative to freshwater.

Ensuring Membrane Performance in Variable Municipal Feed

Major hurdles:

  • Managing variable secondary effluent quality (industrial ingress possible) to prevent fouling in UF/RO membranes.
  • Maintaining high recovery and consistent purity in a 40 MLD continuous operation.
  • Balancing O&M costs (chemicals, energy, cleaning) with revenue from industrial tariffs.
  • Integrating advanced automation (PLC-SCADA) for reliable, low-disruption performance.
  • Scaling from pilot concepts to full operational reliability in a municipal setting.

Robust UF-RO System with Advanced Pre-Treatment & Automation

Core setup: UF (PES In-Out modules, e.g., DuPont tech) for solids/microbial removal and RO for dissolved salts/TDS reduction, with chlorination/chemical dosing for bio-fouling control.
Highlights:

  • High-efficiency UF pre-treatment to protect RO and extend membrane life.
  • Fully automated SCADA controls for remote monitoring, cleaning cycles, and stable operation.
  • Optimized recovery design for maximum net output (40 MLD) with minimal reject management.
  • Proven multi-barrier approach ensuring industrial specs (e.g., TDS <500 mg/L, low color/BOD).

This delivers dependable, revenue-positive reuse aligned with Surat’s leadership in water recycling.
